The Authentic Delicious Greek Yogurt with Honey recipe, including variations, plus tips on how to buy the best yogurt.
Greek yogurt and honey is one of those dishes that everybody eats in Greece. You may have it the morning, but more often yogurt was consumed after a meal because it was believed that it helped with digestion. And we now know that this is true. Yogurt, especially the traditional Greek yogurt that is made from sheep’s milk, contains probiotics that help maintain intestinal health.
Greek yogurt and honey can be consumed for breakfast, a snack and sometimes as a light dinner. Adding nuts such as walnuts or almonds provides additional protein, which can help with satiety. In essence it a complete meal. To make it even more nutritious you can add fruit dried or fresh such as apples, cherries, raisins.
Authentic Greek Yogurt with Honey Ingredients
The most simple form is plain yogurt with a drizzle of honey. By adding other ingredients you transform this into a meal. Also be aware of amounts.
- Yogurt: You want to choose yogurt that only has milk and or cream and live cultures. If it has other things such as gelatin, stabilizers, protein, sweeteners etc it’s not yogurt. You also want to choose plain yogurt, no sweeteners or flavorings. Also you may want to consider full fat as it contains beneficial substances and keeps you full. Do not choose fat free.
- Honey: Choose a favorite variety and don’t add too much. The yogurt should not be swimming in honey.
- Nuts: Adding a few nuts such as walnuts or almonds, can add additional protein and some crunch.
- Bread: A typical traditional Greek breakfast used to be yogurt with a slice of bread. If you want something that is not sweet you can consider this choice.
- Other ingredients: Fruit are a great additions and I’ll sprinkle some cinnamon on top as well.
